Carbohydrate-loading, or carbo-loading as it is commonly known is a strategy which is widespread and employed by endurance atletes all over the world. Along with these athletes, pre-competition body-builders have also been known to carbo-load in the 2-3 days building up to events to maximise their storage of glycogen (and water) in the muscles.
Carbohydrates are stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles. An athlete will derive between 80-90% of their energy from carbohydrates when taking part in long distance or endurance events, this will mostly come from the muscles’ glycogen stores. Body-builders may integrate carbo loading into their regimes with the aim of increasing the size of their muscles and the density of them prior to competitions, particularly as for every gram of glycogen which is stored, 2.7g of water is stored too.
It is widely recommended that before Carbo Loading, endurance athletes complete a short, high-intensity training (HIT) session around 3-4 days before an event, which would aid them by draining glycogen from the stores. Then they should be taking their first high carbohydrate meal within the 4-6 hour window after the session. As for increased muscle glycogen synthesis, endurance training is the primary stimulus.
All carbo-loading days should comprise of training sessions which are tapered, to be in conjunction with 7-10g carbohydrates per kg of body weight (about 60-70% of energy intake). This is because it's very difficult to achieve this level through starch based foods on their own.
